Sobering Center

"Providing safe, short-term sobering and care coordination for acutely intoxicated adults"

What we Do

The Sobering Center is a 24/7 nurse-managed program providing support to individuals who are actively intoxicated on alcohol. Working in a team including registered nurses, medical assistants, health workers and respite workers, our staff offer specialized, targeted care to those with active addiction. We recently initiated a pilot collaboration with UCSF CityWide, providing onsite social work and intensive case management. We are a pre-hospital diversion unit accepting clients aged 18+ both from ambulance and police services.

To qualify for admission to the Sobering Center, individuals must have no apparent medical or psychiatric conditions necessitating emergency interventions.

Throughout a typical client encounter of 6 to 12 hours, our staff:

  • Monitor vital signs
  • Provide nutrition and oral fluids
  • Manage ADLs and hygiene needs, including delousing
  • Engage clients regarding shelter and detoxification needs
  • Perform wound care and other urgent care needs
  • Provide withdrawal management to bridge to detoxification services

Additionally with daytime support of nurse practitioners and physician assistants from the co-located Medical Respite, the staff provide for higher-level urgent care needs and referrals to medical detoxification.

We have an active collaboration with staff from multiple community partners including: Community Awareness and Treatment Services (CATS), the Medical Respite Program, UCSF CityWide Services, Homeless Outreach Team, and Tom Waddell Integrative Medical Services – to offer a supportive, environment responsive to the multivariate needs of individuals with chronic alcohol dependence.
